4th, 5th & 6th Class 2016/2017

We have 28 boys in our room, all working hard.

September:  We have a panel of 21 footballers who have qualified for a semi-final local derby match vs. Castletown at 12.30 on Tuesday 18th in Rathleague, Portlaoise.  We wish all our boys the very best!  We lost our first two matches but have come back strongly to win our last three matches.
Come on our boys in green!

October:  Our 6th class boys enjoyed their visit to Mountrath Community School for their Open Night on 4th of October.  They are all looking forward to their Experience Day on thursday 27th of October from 9.00 a.m. - 3.00 p.m.

On Friday last, 7th of October we all went to Scoil Bhríde to watch some science experiments being carried out.  It seemed as though the smoke cannon was the clear favourite.

Our fantastic footballers had a semi-final match vs Castletown on the 18th of October-unfortunately they didn't win on this occasion but we are so proud of them for their performances, their positive attitudes and their mannerly behaviour both on and off the pitch. They are a credit to themselves, their parents and to our school. Well done boys!

November/December: We are busy rehearsing and learning songs for our Christmas play 'Oliver'. We are looking forward to our performance nights on the 20th and 21st of December.

We carried out Energy Surveys with our parents to gather infonrmation on how we use energy in our homes. The results are on display in the computer room beside the 2014 survey results for all to see-we have made an effort to use energy more economically in our homes and school which is great to see!

Ms. Whelan, Callum and Ben gave us a demonstration on how to make lava lamps in Science. We all made our own lava lamps in pairs, following their procedure and had great fun doing it! We wrote up our Science experiments in our hard back copy for future reference. We also made kites in Scoil Bhríde on Friday 25th November-first we learned of the history of aviation and flight, which was very interesting before being allowed to design and build our own kite

In December, we became archaeologists with a Dig in the Classroom! We got to see, discuss and examine lots of artefacts and fossils first and then got to discover what it’s like to use their tools to conduct a dig of our own. We made Christmas flextangles to integrate with our maths lessons on 2D shapes-they were fiddly and tricky to make but we all got there in the end!

January: When came back to school after our Christmas holidays, we had a student teacher Mr. Molloy in our class for two weeks to teach us Religion and History. We learned about the Reformation and the History of the EU, about the Seven Sacraments and Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. We enjoyed having Mr. Molloy in our classroom and wish him all the best in the future.

Paul has come back as our rugby couch-we’re looking forward to putting our rugby skills to use in a blitz soon! We also learned about renewable and non-renewable forms of energy, climate change and greenhouse effect in preparation for application for our Green Flag in Energy.

We had another visitor to the school to give us a refresher course on how to play chess-we all enjoyed this tremendously and learned from each other during lunch time games too. Thank you to all for their time.

February: We sent a chess team including Josh, Kyle, Dylan and Jamie to The Rock N.S. to represent the school in a chess tournament.

Following our Geography lessons on the countries of the EU, the boys completed individual projects, they are on display in our classroom-we each picked one of the 28 countries of the EU to research and presented our projects to the class. It was lovely to learn a little about our EU neighbours and the boys did a great job presenting their findings!

Our sixth class had their Experience Day in Mountrath Community School on Tuesday 14th of February-they got to meet their friends from other schools, along with teachers and students from the Community School and were given the opportunity to have a taster of what life will be like for them next year as 1st year students.

Science lessons continued in Scoil Bhríde-6th class learned about the water cycle and sowed seeds inside a recycled plastic bottle that will water itself! 3rd, 4th and 5th class made pictures from recycled materials.
They also learned how long it takes certain objects to biodegrade.

March:

In March we sent our quiz team of Callum, Dylan, Kyle and Mark to the Cumann na mBunscol quiz help in Stradbally N.S.-they did very well, getting great score!

We had our first Cumman na mBunscol hurling match on the 24th of March away vs Ballyadams. Unfortunately, the boys didn’t win but they played very well.
